York County, Pennsylvania Inmate Search

A York County inmate search pulls data compiled by law enforcement on the detention of an individual in the county. The results of the search often reveal a detainee/inmate’s identity, the arrest date and time, and other booking data.

In York County, law enforcement duties, including arrests, are carried out by several law enforcement agencies, including the York City Police Department, the Northern York County Regional Police Department, and the York County Sheriffs Office. These departments, however, do not maintain independent jail rosters and instead process their arrests through the county correctional system.

The York County Prison administration, led by the Interim Warden, oversees the prison and handles all local matters related to inmates. Inmate details are made available to the public through approved channels by this overseeing body.

How to Find an Inmate in York County Jail

Direct contact with the York County Prison remains the most effective way to find York County inmates.

Inquiries about persons in custody can be made via phone at (717) 840-7580. Callers will need to present a name, booking date, or case number, whichever information they have, so the administrator can locate the correct record.

Inquirers may also visit the prison in person to ask staff at the records or information desk about an inmate’s custody status. This method is often more direct and may reduce processing time. To facilitate a quicker retrieval of the correct record, the requester should provide specific details (names, numbers, dates).

What Information is Included in the York County Inmate Roster

Pursuant to the Pennsylvania Right-to-Know Law (RTKL), York County inmate records are public and can be inspected by anyone. However, the RTKL is not without exceptions-for example, juvenile records are exempt.

  • Full name
  • Alias, if any
  • Age
  • Date of birth
  • Height

Upon an inmate’s admission, any money they have is deposited into an account, and a receipt is provided for their transactions. Funds can also be added to this account by friends and family through the approved methods, including the kiosk located in the facilities’ visiting area. Visitors can deposit cash at the kiosk.

Loved ones can also send funds through the prison’s current commissary or tablet vendor. Depositors must create an account with the vendor and enter all required details to complete payments. In this case, funds can be added using credit or debit cards.

Deposit or transfer services are not free.

York County Prison does not accept personal checks, money orders, or cash through the mail.

Inmate Search by Jail Facility

York County contains three primary detention centers: the York County Prison, the Work Release Center, and the juvenile detention center. Despite having three physical locations, inmate information is categorized into two distinct record systems. The juvenile facility maintains its own internal records, whereas the county prison manages a unified roster for individuals held at both the main prison and the Work Release Center.

To retrieve information on individuals held in any detention facility, inquirers must contact the facility where the inmate is housed directly. However, it is worth noting that juvenile records are not public and can only be accessed by authorized individuals.

York County Visitation Rules and Schedules

Visits to inmates held in York County can be conducted remotely (video visits) or onsite (in-person visits).

Certain requirements must be met for a visit to an inmate to be approved. These include

  • Visitors must be pre-approved and listed on the inmate’s active visiting list.
  • Visitors must register on the approved private vendor’s website to schedule a visit.
  • Visits must be requested (i.e., scheduled) a minimum of 24 hours in advance and up to 7 days ahead.
  • All on-site visitors and their belongings are subject to search and must pass through metal detectors. Bagpacks, suitcases, cameras, bags, and electronic devices are not allowed into the facility.
  • All visitors are expected to adhere to the prescribed dress code.

Minors aged 14 to 17 may visit on their own; however, they must not visit during school hours and must have a signed permission slip from their parents.

Family members and friends who cannot visit the county prison in person can still connect with their loved ones through video visitation from any location with reliable internet access.

Personal visits cost $15 for 0 to 30 minutes, while professional visits cost $25.20 for 0 to 30 minutes and $50.20 for 31 to 60 minutes.

Mailing and Commissary Information

Residents of York County Prison have options to exchange correspondence with their loved ones, attorneys, or government officials. In other words, inmates can send and receive personal mail and also receive legal (privileged) mail.

Each type of mail is handled differently.

Legal Mail

Legal mail or email (at YCPInmateLegalMail@YorkCountyPA.gov) can be sent directly to the facility. Physical mail must not exceed 75 pages. Mail that exceeds 75 pages must be accompanied by a court order; otherwise, it will be returned to the sender.

For emails, legal representatives and attorneys must be verified and added to the facility’s email list. To do this, the attorney or legal representative must email a copy of their Bar card or G-28, photo identification, and email address to the prison records office. Following the verification, the attorney or legal representative will receive a confirmation email.

Sending or receiving emails does not incur any fee.

Personal Mail

Personal correspondence follows a different process. Instead of sending mail directly to an inmate, the facility offers a text messaging option through a private service provider. Friends and family must create an account and deposit money in the inmate’s account. They can then send messages electronically through the service provider’s website or mobile application. The messages are printed out and delivered to the inmate.

Alternatively, individuals can also send personal correspondence (letters, pictures, drawings) to the prison’s digital scanning site. The standard mailing format is
